La Concha regattas in San Sebastian are usually held on first two September Sundays, though they coould also coincide with the end of August. They are part of the city festivities when you may have also the opportunity to watch fireworks on a sailboat.
La Concha regattas in San Sebastian have been held since 1879. The origin dates back to a way of life around fishing in the open sea. The rowers of these boats needed to be strong and resistant, capable of keeping the vogue for hours until they reached the fishing grounds and, once the fishing was collected, returned to port loaded and at full speed to carry out the auction.
Named “Bandera de la Concha” (la Concha Flag) and colloquially known as “the rowing olympiad”, this is the most prestigious drifter boat race of the season and the region. Boats from all over the Cantabrian coast compete to carry off the Flag (Bandera). The level of this competition is simply impressive.
